Why Sky School?

Have you ever laid on the grass, looked up at the sky, and felt that incredible sense of wonder and awe? When you start to think about your place in the world, and what feels like all the endless opportunities laid out before you? Somehow those moments seem to slip away from us as adults, and we worry they’re getting few and far between for tamariki today, in amongst technology and the constant ‘busy-ness’ of life.

We hope to evoke that same sense of wonder and awe in tamariki every single day, through using the nature that surrounds us. At Sky School, we want tamariki to learn about their place in the world, through discovering their own unique skills and passions and sense of ‘you’-ness.

We think anyone and anything under the sky has the potential to teach us something- and we will utilise all the resources available to us, including people we know in the community, and of course our amazing environment, to aid in our learning journey.

We truly believe where there is wonder and awe, there is excitement and drive, and then the sky is the limit for what there is to learn and discover.

Our Philosophy

At Sky School, we believe in the individuality and uniqueness of each child- we aim to provide opportunities for hands-on child-led experiences that use the natural environment as our third teacher. We have seen time and time again that the best learning happens when children are interested, engaged and having fun, and our small group numbers allow us to connect with each student, truly getting to understand their interests and passions. We believe in the importance of play, experimenting and exploring- and using anything under the sky as our ‘classroom’.

We believe that every individual has skills to offer, and we can all learn from one another. Having mixed age groups means that tuakana-teina learning can occur- the relationship between an older (tuakana) and younger (teina) person, and the different insights they both have to offer.

“Ko te ahurei o te tamaiti arahia o tatou mahi.”

Let the uniqueness of the child guide our work.
